Virtual classrooms at APS Dagshai :19th founder’s day

Dagshai, June 1
Army Public School here has become one of the few schools to introduce virtual classrooms for offering satellite-based educational facilities to its students. A Very Small Aperture Terminal Network (V-SAT) link has been established at the school for the purpose.

Stating this at the institute’s 19th founder’s day, the school Principal, Col A.K. Maini (retd), said this facility would open up a world of knowledge for the students and also help them prepare for competitive examinations.

Addressing students, their parents and the faculty, General Officer Commanding 2 Corps, Lieut-Gen K.D.S. Shekhawat, who was the chief guest on the occasion, said children were the hope of the nation and the essential ingredients of national power. “All children have a major role to play if national power has to come into prominence,” he remarked.

Towards this end, he exhorted students to strive for excellence in whatever field they chose. He stressed upon inculcation of discipline, professionalism and secularism in their lives. He also urged teachers to strive for creating a healthy environment for students which was free of tension and worry.

In his report, Colonel Maini stated that this year 69 students appeared for the Class XII examinations and bagged a total of 104 distinctions. In Class X, 51 students appeared and bagged 80 distinctions. The Principal, however, added that there was scope for improvement in chemistry, economics and mathematics. The school has bagged a host of prizes in state and national level sports and co-curricular activities.

General Shekhawat announced a grant of Rs 50,000 for upgrading facilities at the school. He also gave away prizes to students for their achievements in academics and co-curricular activities.

The sports trophy was bagged by Patel House, while the athletics trophy went to Tagore House. The best kept house trophy and the best disciplined house trophy went to Indira and Subhash houses, respectively, while the academics trophy was bagged by Nehru House. Vandana Singh of Class XII was declared as the best allround student for the year 2004-05. Students were also given prizes for individual performance.

A cultural programme consisting of songs, dances and an English play was presented by the students. A science, art and craft exhibition was put up in which models and works of art prepared by students during the year were displayed.

Interesting peice of Dagshai History:MUST READ

Mutiny in India, 1920

When news of the Anglo-Irish War, especially of the behaviour of the British Black and Tan "Auxilliaries" (para-military police), reached the veterans of the 1st Btn at Jalandhar, India, the mutiny began. On 28 June 1920, five men from C Company refused to take orders from the British officers, declaring their intent not to serve the King until the British forces left Ireland. The Union Jack at Jullundur, on the North West Frontier, was replaced by the tricolour flag of the Irish Republic, stitched together by men who had bought lengths of material from the local bazaars. Within three days, the mutiny was stamped out and the mutineers taken to prison camp at Dagshai.

At Solan, rumours began in the Rangers detachement there that the prisoners had been executed. Under the command of Private James Daly, about 70 Rangers joined the mutiny and attacked the armoury. The British guard successfully defended it: Privates Sears and Smyth were killed in firing while others were taken prisoners. On all, about four hundred men had joined the mutiny. Eighty eight men were court martialled for mutiny. Fourteen men were condemned to death, most of the rest were given prison sentences up to 15 years and a few were acquitted. For all except Daly, the death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment. Daly (21, of Tyrrelspass, County Westmeath), was executed by firing squad in Dagshai prison on November 2, 1920, and is the last member of British Forces to be executed for mutiny. Ptes Sears and Smyth were buried at Solan; James Daly and John Miranda (who had died in prison) were buried in Dagshai graveyard.

An Ode To Maj Udai Singh SC,SM 1 PARA SF

Major Udai Singh, SC, SM, 1974-2003

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j167/dagshai/udai1.jpg

Major Udai Singh SC, SM was born at 2.15 pm on Monday October 7, 1974 in Allahbad.

He had a happy, contented childhood spent in small cantonment towns across the country. St. Patricks at Deolali was his first school, after which he studied at St Georges,Agra & APS Delhi. His formative & most memorable years were spent at the Army Public School, Dagshai from where he passed out in 1992.

Not one for academics he excelled in games & sports & other extra curricular activities. He loved his alma mater & was forever grateful for the opportunity he'd had, taking time off to visit it as often as he could in the years to follow.

Udai, graduated from Deshbandhu College, Delhi with an honors degree in Political Science and was soon absorbed as a management trainee with the Taj Mansingh, Delhi. What he aspired to was a career in the Special Forces of the Indian Army

"I do not wish to spend my life waiting on hotel guests" he'd say. "I want to be that 5 star guest".

His ambition was partly fulfilled on passing out from the IMA in June 1997. He was commissioned into the first battalion of the Parachute Regiment.

"My life in the army", he confessed to a friend, " is doomed if I do not clear the probation".

Clear it he did and was with the paltan for five wonderful years before volunteering for the Special Group - the mavericks. He soon became one of them.

His brief career was spent almost entirely in the mountains of Kashmir with a few months here and there given to the short courses run by the army. He did the free fall & the para jumps along with a course in deep sea diving.

He loved what he did never regretting for an instant his choice of career. His life in the army was a source of great pride and enthusiasm. It was all that he had ever wished it to be.

Major Udai Singh is survived by his parents Col. KKK Singh (Retd.), mother Sudha and sister Lalima. They can be contacted at 880, Sector 29, Noida (UP) Tel: 0120 -2451859.
